Regenerating Your Recovery Codes

Replace your two-factor recovery codes with a new set when you have used most of them or think they are no longer private. A MentorStack help center guide.

Recovery codes let you sign in when you lose your authenticator device. You get 10 when you set up two-factor authentication, and each one works once. You can replace the whole set at any time.

Warning

Your old recovery codes stop working as soon as the new ones are created. This includes codes you have not used yet.

Before you start

You need:

  • Two-factor authentication turned on for your account.
  • Your current password.
  • Your authenticator app, to read a 6-digit code.

If you sign in through your organization's single sign-on and have no MentorStack password, MentorStack shows "Your account has no password set. Contact your SSO provider or an org admin for help." In that case, ask your org admin for help.

Get a new set of codes

  1. Open Settings and find the Two-factor authentication card. It shows "Enabled since" and the date.
  2. Click Regenerate recovery codes.
  3. Enter your Current password.
  4. Enter the 6-digit code from your authenticator app in the field labelled Enter the 6-digit code from your app.
  5. Click Regenerate.
  6. On the Save your recovery codes screen, use Copy codes or Download as .txt. The file is named mentorstack-recovery-codes.txt.
  7. Select I have saved my recovery codes, then click Done.

The Done button stays disabled until you select the checkbox. After you click Done, MentorStack no longer shows the codes. If you did not save them, repeat the steps above to get another set.

If it does not work

  • Incorrect password. Check the password and try again.
  • Invalid verification code. Wait for the next code in your authenticator app and try again.
  • This code has already been used. Wait for a new code. MentorStack does not accept the same authenticator code twice.
  • Too many attempts. Wait, then try again.
  • You lost your authenticator device. You cannot regenerate codes without a current authenticator code. Sign in with one of your saved recovery codes. If you have none, contact your admin or MentorStack support to reset two-factor authentication. See Two-Factor Authentication.

Keep your codes safe

Store them in a password manager or print them and keep the page somewhere private. Anyone who has a code and your password can sign in as you.
