Pausing, Completing or Ending a Match

How to pause and resume a mentoring match, mark it complete with a reflection, or cancel it, and what each choice does.

A match does not have to run forever. When the relationship needs a break, has met its goals, or is not working, you can change its status yourself. Both people in the match can do this, and so can an admin.

Where to find the buttons

  1. Open Matches in the sidebar.
  2. Click the match to open its detail page.
  3. Look at the top right, next to the title. The buttons shown depend on the match status.
StatusButtons you see
ActivePause, Cancel, Complete
PausedResume, Cancel
CompletedNone for participants. Admins of a one-on-one match also see Renew Match.
CancelledNone

A match that is still waiting for a response shows Accept and Decline to the person who has to respond. See Your Mentoring Relationships.

Pause and resume

Pause a match when you need time away, such as leave or a busy quarter.

  1. Click Pause.
  2. Read "This will pause the match. You can resume it later." and click Confirm.

The match shows "Match paused" and moves to the Inactive tab of your Matches list. To bring it back, open the match and click Resume. Resume takes effect right away, with no confirmation.

Note

Action items can be created or completed only while a match is Active. Pause the match and those buttons disappear until you resume.

Complete a match

Complete a match when you have reached your goals and the formal mentoring period is over.

  1. Click Complete.
  2. Read "This will mark the match as completed." and click Confirm.
  3. MentorStack shows "Match completed" and opens the reflection dialog, Reflect on your mentorship with followed by your partner's name.
  4. Answer the prompt, then click Save Reflection, or click Skip.

Mentees are asked "What's the most valuable thing you gained?" and mentors are asked "What growth did you see in your mentee?" Both can also pick skills that were developed. A mentee's reflection is saved to their portfolio, and the mentor can also see it in theirs. A mentor's reflections are saved to the mentor's portfolio only, and the mentee does not see them. See your portfolio under Mentee Portfolio or Mentor Portfolio.

If your program runs in cohorts and the cohort has ended, the match page shows a banner with a Complete match button.

Cancel a match

Cancel ends a match without marking it complete. Use it when the pairing is not working.

  1. Click Cancel.
  2. Read "This will cancel the match permanently. This cannot be undone." and click Confirm.

The match shows "Match cancelled" and moves to the Inactive tab. All participants are removed from the live chat room for that match. A cancelled match cannot be reopened. If you want a fresh start, talk to your program admin about a new match.

Warning

Cancel is permanent. If you only need a break, use Pause instead.

Plan limits

On the Free Pilot, each member can hold 2 active matches. Paused matches count toward that limit, so pausing does not free up a slot. Complete or cancel a match to free one. Starter and above have no per-person limit.

Renewing a completed match

Admins can click Renew Match on a completed one-on-one match. MentorStack then creates a new match between the same two people, waiting for the mentor to accept. The completed match is left unchanged.
