Working with Action Items
Create, assign, and complete action items for a mentoring match, from the match page or when you wrap up a meeting.
An action item is a concrete next step that comes out of a mentoring conversation. Each one has an owner, a priority, and an optional due date, so commitments do not slip between sessions. Both people in a match can create and complete them.
Add an action item from the match page
- Open Matches in the sidebar and click your match.
- Click the Action Items tab.
- Click Add Action Item.
- Under What needs to be done?, describe the step in up to 500 characters.
- Under Assign to, choose who owns it. The other person in the match is selected by default.
- Choose a Priority: Low, Med, or High. Med is the default.
- Optional: set a Due date.
- Optional: under Meeting, link the item to one of the match's meetings. This field appears once the match has meetings.
- Click Create Action Item.
MentorStack confirms with "Action item created". The new item appears in the list with its assignee, priority, and due date.
Add action items when you wrap up a meeting
When you click Wrap up meeting, the Wrap up this meeting dialog has an optional Action Items section. Click Add Item for each step, then fill in the description, Assign to, Priority (Low, Medium, or High), and an optional Due Date. The items are saved with the meeting summary. See Scheduling & Running Meetings.
Complete an action item
- Open the match and click the Action Items tab.
- Find the item and click Complete.
MentorStack shows "Action item completed", marks the item Done, and records the completion date. The other people in the match get an in-app notification titled "Action item completed". You can also click Complete from the Action Items list of a meeting on the Meetings tab, where the button shows only on items assigned to you.
Find and filter your items
- The tab header shows the count, for example "Action Items (2 open, 1 done)".
- Use the open, all, and completed buttons to filter. The tab opens on open.
- An item created from a meeting shows From: with the meeting name or date. Click it to go to the meetings.
- Your own open items also appear in the Next Steps section of your dashboard, sorted by priority and then due date, with a View link.
Note
You can create and complete action items only while the match is Active. On a paused, completed, or cancelled match, the list stays visible but the Add Action Item and Complete buttons do not appear. Resume the match first. See Pausing, Completing or Ending a Match.
Tip
Keep each item small enough to finish before the next meeting. Review open items at the start of every session so nothing carries over unnoticed.
The list shows the 300 most recent items for a match. If you reach that number, the tab says so.
